Problems in Manufacturing: Five Questions to Ask

Thursday December 11, 2014

When I begin any manufacturing process optimization consultation, I start by asking a set of key questions. Please watch my video to find out what those questions are, and why I ask them.

Why you should answer these questions about your manufacturing process

This is how I can start you down the path to real transformation for your manufacturing operations. Your answers to these questions will form the basis of my upcoming posts as I explain how to tackle the potential manufacturing deficiencies you've uncovered.

Here are the questions in text:

  • Is your process clogged with excessive Work In Process inventory?
  • Are you using Manpower Efficiency or Equipment Utilization to monitor your process?
  • Is your On Time Delivery less than 90%?
  • Is your company's bottom line anemic and/or stagnated?
  • If you could sell more product, do you have the capacity to produce it?

Hi Steve. When ECi M1 first approached me, I was somewhat dumbfounded by what they wanted me to do. In all my years in Continuous Improvement, which I might add are a significant number, I have never been approached to provide this kind of guidance to another company's customer. I absolutely agree with your comments, especially about it being a great lesson for every company to pass along this same level of customer commitment to their own customer base. Actually, indirectly I can do that for you if you pass along a link to ECi M1's blog. I'm very excited about helping ECi M1's customers improve their operations and ultimately their profitability. I think it is a fantastic initiative my ECI M1 to engage bob to deliver this guidance. It shows the advanced thinking of the organisation to deliver more to its customers than would normally be expected. A great lesson to us as their customers to pass on to ours. Well done!
